L'altra storia - Giselle Aronson

Texto en español en Breves no tan breves: "La otra historia"

Traducido al italiano por Stefano Valente

Laerte, amato padre

O.

In the beginning you seemed unreachable. You were standing as in a pedestal, an authentic Greek goddess. I used to look at you from below and always saw you: hieratic, undaunted, and brilliant.
One day I dared to come close to you stretching my hands out, willing to touch you. I saw you coming towards me, trembling, as if you were getting out of balance. And all I thought I knew about you fell apart in that brief instant.
"Head trauma" the doctor said. "You were lucky that bronze statuette didn’t kill you".

Giselle Aronson

Only Andrea - Giselle Aronson

Texto en español en Breves no tan breves: "Sólo Andrea".

Traducido al inglés por Judith Aronson.

Only one person knew what had become of Horace Meller when it was Friday, May 14 without having to report to work all week. She had no proof or stated, had long shared with him the same office of the municipality, eight hours a day, five days a week. The friendship between them had grown hopelessly. Andrea and Horace were similar: quiet and complex. At first, only related during work hours, then with the passage of time and the fall of inhibitions, encouraged to go to the movies, theater, dinner, invite to their homes. Together they became talkative.
He was electric. Walked at a rate unattainable. Save water to negligible levels, so that when shampooing head, shut the faucet and open it again to rinse. His face remained serious most of the time, but has sharp humor. Worked for survival and read, always read tirelessly. Consumed books as if his live depended on it.
She was moody and changeable. Laughed and cried with the same intensity. Listened music even when sleeping and watched her figure with a cheat system: if one day she ate a lot, the other nothing. Work was a way of ordering her life and served to relieve stress.
Once forged friendship, Horace had been recommending to Andrea selected readings of what he had most enjoyed. Sometimes he lent copies of his personal library, others were bought and given as gifts. She accepted the suggestions and read as an obedient pupil.
For a long time neither one questioned anything beyond friendship. Until Horace vanished. Without warning, without a telegram of resignation, without a signal or warning. On Wednesday 12 May, she was worried about his absence and felt, for the first time, the need for him, for knowing of him. She began to wonder what might have happened. The answers channeled her toward the books that Horace had given her as gifts: Our Lady of Solitude, The Book of Illusions, The Invention of Morel, Martin Eidan, Leviathan. Thursday she was reviewing all those titles that passed through her mind like ghosts doom. By early Friday, Andrea discovered the invisible thread between the books: all narrated disappearances. Then she felt a clear relief: Horace had begun writing his own novel.

Neither - Giselle Aronson

Texto en español en Cultura Back: "Tampoco".

Do not remember where she read that seven is a lucky number. For who, she wondered. Julia Balcarce does not get along with the number seven. Such a quantity has been the leading roles that different colleagues would still from her. Seven grievances accumulated feeding his self-pity excuses for a failed actress.
She finishes mending the rag doll who built throughout the week, not her image, but as a crude emulation of the seven thieves in question. In each one chose a trait that she traded to her cloth stuffed creature. And yet, the doll looks increasingly like Julia.
With the pretext of a feigned predictable invitation to hunt to Baradero, she asked a friend of his dead father to lend her his gun. The old man, touched by the love of women inherited, handed her the gun while retelling stories heard a hundred times on hunting expeditions that friends were doing, once.
She does the last stitch with care to avoid injury from the needle. "No blood run, she thinks, and finished with a knot. Load everything in the car and drive to the railway land. At that time the policemen in the area are having lunch, no one will notice the noise.
Seize the trunk of a tree and lays the wrist. Remember the instructions that his grandfather gave her to load the shotgun. Prepares cartridges, enter one in the pipe, mounts the hammer, sees through the sights and fires. Seven times.
Then she approaches the frayed doll , can not leave her there. Back to get her, along with the shotgun in the car.
Even offstage she accomplished playing a real killer.
Once again, back home, she does not hear the applause.
